SAIE Selection

In search of young talent: SAIE Selection, the international competition for students, designers and architects under the age of 40, is back.

Following on from the success of 2009, the exhibition will also be repeating SAIE Selection, a competition open to students, designers and architects under the age of 40 organised by BolognaFiere in cooperation with Archi-Europe and Edilio.

In keeping with this year’s theme, the title of the competition is "Integrate to build – Highly integrated innovative and sustainable buildings". The purpose of the competition is to select 24 projects that adopt innovative solutions and technologies for building projects with a high level of sustainability.
The panel, chaired by architect Mario Cucinella, will focus in particular on projects that respond to one of the following three fundamental parameters:

  • sustainability criteria:the submitted projects must display high standards of energy efficiency and emissions reductions – if possible verified by existing evaluation systems – not just during construction but throughout the entire lifecycle; compliance with these standards must be documented as falling into an energy class (pursuant to European Directive 2002/91/EC);
  • innovative solutions: special attention will be given to projects that present innovative technologies and materials in terms of integrated technical solutions, materials, construction systems and automation technologies backed by technical documentation demonstrating the level of innovation. In particular, awards will be presented for solutions referring to the three large theme areas of SAIE 2010:

- energy&sustainability, and therefore solutions aiming to achieve the goal of "zero emissions";
- services for designing, building and maintenance, for example solutions that use advanced tools or systems such as BIM or intelligent design aid;
- site&production, such as solutions that promote efficiency and safety in off-site and on-site production;

  • costs: the submitted projects must have competitive costs in terms of construction, operation and management.

All submitted projects will be selected and evaluated on the basis of the prevalent construction technologies, divided into the four sections “metal&glass”, “brick”, “wood” and “concrete”.

Three works will be selected for each of the four sections in both categories, making a total of 24 works. The first selected entrants in each of the four sections of the architects aged under 40 category will be invited to present their work in a seminar coordinated by Mario Cucinella, while the first three selected entrants in the students category will take part in the workshop entitled “Integrating with Energy”. All 24 selected projects will be exhibited in the Services Centre during SAIE from 27 to 30 October and will be featured on a CD-ROM produced by BolognaFiere.

The launch date of the competition and opening date for submissions is Wednesday 17 March, while the deadline for submissions is 3rd September.
